Installing Aftermarket Speakers
Car Stereo Repair Home | Car Stereo Removal | BOSE Repair | FAQ | Shipping | Top 10 | About Us

Of course it is important to have the right size speaker for your application. The correct installation and speaker phasing is also important.

What is phasing? Each speaker has a positive and negative connecting terminal. Reversing speaker wires to one of these terminals, on just one speaker can cause loss of bass!

If Speakers are Already Connected
To test for phasing, turn the bass up on the stereo, volume to a comfortable listening level, fade speakers to the front, then balance speakers from one side to the other. As you go through the center detent position from one speaker to the other, does the bass drop out only to come back when you balance to the opposite side? YES! Speakers are out of phase. Now, fade to rear speakers and repeat this test. Then balance all to one side and fade front to rear, repeat for opposite side.

When Installing Aftermarket Speakers
We have added tips to determine which wire is positive and negative for each speaker, "Speaker Phasing". You do not need to know the wire color code for the vehicle, you will figure this out with a few easy steps. Phasing is important, you will loose bass with out of phase speakers.

It is always important to give a good physical inspection of the removed speaker. There may be markings for + and - at the terminals. Trace these markings back through the connector to determine the correct speaker phasing for hook up. If these markings are not present, proceed with the following steps.

Shown in these steps is a Dodge Dakota. Procedure is applicable for all installations.

1) Cut factory speaker lead approximately two inches from connector but not too long where you will have to fight with short speaker wires from door side when installing speaker.

1) Strip wires on connector cut from above step.

1) Connect back to removed factory speaker.

1) Remove dust cover from front of speaker. This may not be necessary in many application. The object here is to be able to see the face of the speaker.

1) Connect each striped speaker lead to opposite ends of battery. Watch the center cone jump. Turn battery around to the position that causes the speaker cone to jump in the direction of the shown arrow, away from the speaker magnet. The wire connected to the + side of the battery is the + speaker lead. Check the color of this wire. Use this same colored wire at the door to connect your new speaker.

1) Check wires at door for polarity. Most aftermarket speakers supply a set of wires. Check the aftermarket speakers, they are usually labeled near the connector for polarity.

  1) Splice you aftermarket speaker wires to corresponding factory wire and connect speakers.

  1) Mount speaker.
