Repair, Remove and Install
Ford Expedition '99
Odometer blinks or no display Odometer blinks intermittently or blank
1.1) Remove dash gauge assembly.
NOTE - Choose a clean work area. Placing the face of the
gauges on a soft towel will help. Less of a chance of scratching the front
panel.
2.1) Lay dash gauge assembly on
face and remove screw from cover.
3.1) Remove second screw from
cover.
4.1) Remove remaining screws
from cover.
5.1) Remove cover and set to
side.
6.1) Release connector from PCB
(Printed Circuit Board).
7.1) Check all SMR (Surface
Mount Resistors) for good connection. Removing solder and apply fresh
solder to all large SMR's on PCB.
8.1) Gently lift edge of PCB
from gauges. This process will release front gauge connections from PCB.
9.1) Work your way across middle
of PCB lifting from gauges.
10.1) Work your way across to end
of PCB lifting from gauges. Then work around entire PCB.
11.1) Remove PCB from gauges.
12.1) Locate connector on PCB.
Mating connector was removed in an earlier step.
13.1) Turn PCB over and locate
back side of connector.
14.1) Flow new solder ALL connections
for connector. Look for circles around center of solder joint, poor solder.
... We are missing several steps here. I'd suggest removing white plastic frame
from gauge assembly. You want access to the connections for this
connector. You can reach them from this small opening, but the end
connections are difficult to reach. You may cause a solder bridge and not
see it!
15.1) When reinstalling, this
small pen looking object is the odometer reset button. It will fall out of
the gauges at some point and you will wonder what it is.
16.1) With back plastic cover
reinstalled, place odometer reset into opening before installing PCB.
17.1) Odometer reset installed.
FORD MACH 460 - No or 901 Subs - Intermittent
1.1) Remove the panel along the bottom of the door opening, driver's side, releasing clips. All clips release with pry pressure. Remove panel and set to side.
2.1) At kick panel, pry long clip from panel and remove.
3.1) Remove kick panel and set to side.
4.1) Pull edge of carpet back.
5.1) We found the junction connector that supplies power and ground to the amplifiers disconnected. Upon close examination, the trigger on one of the connectors was broken from the repeated times the side of the car was kicked from entering and exiting the vehicle. Placed the connectors back together, we had sound to all speakers. Electrical tape secured the connector and she was on her way!

You have called the dealership, did they mention removal and repair of the
stereo? Taking care of this problem could cost many dollars, please see
the "Click Here" link after the following posted procedure.
This problem occurs when attempting to
store a radio station when a blank RDS signal is being transmitted.
To restore Ford Focus radio
1. Insert a CD, stereo will turn on in CD mode.
2. Press MENU button
3. Select DEFAULT RESET by turning the right
rotary knob and press to select
4. Select YES by tuning the right rotary
knob and press select
5. Press BACK button
6. Press the RDS button once, display will
read RDS OFF
7. Stereo will now work properly
To prevent this problem from occurring
again, be sure some text is in the top line of the display when setting a
stereo station. Do not set a station when the station name is blank from
display.
Ford Explorer / Alpine
AM/FM/Cassette - No or intermittent display, car

Many, many problems with this car radio. To start, this radio requires a total replacement of ALL capacitors, check circuit board traces closely for deterioration from capacitor leakage. Replace!
AM/FM/Cass
No tape, or distorted tape audio, display
reads BAD, distorted output on radio, AM or FM or both, no power or intermittent.
Ford
Dead, does not power up. REPLACE.
JBL / Premium Sound
Does not power up, this is the control head.
The defective unit may be the controller-tuner-amplifier. It may be located in
the trunk or in the dash in pick-ups. You can recognize the difference
between this radio and the above radio when removing, there is no antenna plugged into this radio.
Ford / Single CD / Sony (Nissan Quest)
Parts are no longer available,
we do not repair these CD players.
Ford / Taurus
Defective tape, defective AM and FM good or poor, check antenna.
Defective AM or FM, defective tuner box with amplifier, located in trunk on
drivers side wheel well.
We suggest a salvage yard on this one.
85-92+ Ford
Distorted output on tape.
For bad display, static, scratchy or loss of audio when adjusting volume
controls.
Radio Shack sells a "Control/Contact
Cleaner". Remove the stereo and top cover for access to openings in rheostat
volume control. Spay, rotate control and repeat several times. Radio Shack
also sells the bayonet lamp for the display.
88-91 Ford / Premium Sound
There are many problems with this car stereo and we find it not
economically repairable.

Mercury Grand Marquis
Static in car radio when rear window
defroster is tuned on. The Amplifier is the problem, it is being redesigned
through the manufacturer. Check with your local dealership for an update.
